University of Newcastle’s sport-mad students and Alumni were honoured at a special event in Newcastle last night.

The University of Newcastle Sports Awards recognise exceptional sporting achievement with 15 individuals and two sports clubs receiving prestigious awards.

Guest speaker, Australian Olympic gold medallist, Kerri Pottharst, entertained 170 people at Newcastle City Hall, when she walked on broken glass to show how commitment, vision, and mental strength could overcome fear to achieve sporting success.

Triathlete, Laura Harris was announced the Sports Person of the Year. Among her achievements, Laura won the 18-24 Ironman 70.3 event in Port Macquarie and then went on to represent Australia in the World 70.3 Championships last year.

The Sports Club of the Year broke from tradition with two Clubs named the joint winners. The University’s Snow Sports and Water Polo Clubs were recognised for their attainment of high standards in sports administration.
