The University of Newcastle’s Dr Michael Ondaatje has been recognised for his outstanding contribution both to the discipline of history and to the humanities in Australia.

Dr Ondaatje is a joint recipient of the Australian Academy of the Humanities 2012 Max Crawford Medal.

The Medal is granted to early career Australian researchers for outstanding scholarly achievement in the humanities in Australia, and to those whose publications make an exceptional contribution to the understanding of humanities disciplines by the general public.

An expert in American history and politics, Dr. Ondaatje is the author of the award-winning 2010 book, Black Conservative Intellectuals in Modern America, and is a regular media commentator on ABC radio. Dr. Ondaatje is also the winner of several major teaching awards, including two at the national level.

Dr Ondaatje will be presented with his award at the Annual Fellows’ Dinner in Parramatta on Friday 16 November.
