University of Newcastle PhD candidate Babette Rae spoke with 1233 ABC Newcastle’s Gerry Collins about whether you can learn how to have perfect musical pitch or if you need to be born with it.

Absolute Pitch, which is also sometimes known as perfect pitch, is the ability to identify and label a musical note that is sounded without the comparison of a reference note. Absolute Pitch is considered to be a very rare ability with estimates as low as 1 in 10,000 in the general population. Some studies have suggested that 1 in 15 highly accomplished musicians have Absolute Pitch.

Aired at 3pm each Tuesday, Show Us your PhD is a 1233 ABC Newcastle’s radio series used to promote and share postgraduate research.
