Celebrating and recognising outstanding student contributions to campus life at the University of Newcastle was the focus of the 2015 Campus Life Awards, presented on November 4th.

The third annual Campus Life Awards night was a resounding success as University staff joined with our students to celebrate what has been a wonderful year of participation and support, continuing to enhance the student experience at the University of Newcastle.

The Campus Life Awards and the 2015 recipients were:

Volunteer of the Year

The Volunteer of the Year recognises a student who has generously volunteered their time throughout 2015 to improve the student experience for fellow students on campus. These students are enthusiastic, reliable and friendly.

2015 Volunteer of the Year – Renay Clack:

“Renay is an open, welcoming and enthusiastic volunteer showing an outstanding level of commitment to enhancing fellow students’ experiences. Renay goes above and beyond what is expected every time.”

Highly Commended – Andreena Kardamis, Jacqueline Walsh, Nic Roberts.

Club of the Year

The Club of the Year Award acknowledges a club, society or association that has worked hard to engage a large number of students across the University, has been active throughout the year, reached out to a broad range of students and operates under sound governance and leadership principles.

2015 Club of the Year – Exercise and Sport Science Club:

“The ESS Club has actively engaged their members and the UON community on the Ourimbah campus through their organisation of small and large events, participation in mental health initiatives, charity fundraising and career and skill building opportunities.”

Club Event of the Year

Club Event of the Year recognises a highly successful and engaging event run by a club or society that was well organised, had a good number of participants and reached different student groups.

Club Event of the Year (under 100 members) – Exercise & Sports Science Club Sports Championships:

“The Championships are held each Monday from Week 3 in Semester 2 and brings together six (unlimited size) teams made up of students from all three years of the Bachelor of Exercise & Sports Science, as well as other Ourimbah based students. BBQs are also held to raise funds for the club’s ongoing activities.

Club Event of the Year (over 100 members) – The University of Newcastle Affordable Wine Appreciation Society (aka the Goonion) (Goondependance Day):

“Themed as a birthday party, this is the largest event on the Goonion calendar. Planning commenced in 2014 to ensure a wide range of events catering for a broad cross section of students. Over 350 students attended as a result of coordinated promotions and the event’s reputation – and because it’s free!

Highly Commended – Robogals Newcastle (Rural Trip), Edwards Hall Resident Members Association (Parents Weekend)

Campus Life Award

The Campus Life Award is given to a student who has shown an outstanding commitment to enhancing the experience of their fellow UON students. These students are the people who get involved and help others to have a great time at University.

2015 Campus Life Award – James Rabbitt:

“James devotes the majority of his time to initiatives that improve the student experience. As President of Robogals James led the club to teach over 2,000 female high school students and has personally volunteered over 200 hours. Outside his work with Robogals James built a claw machine for Create 2308, assisted in the development of governance training for club/society executives, is a pen pal for prospective students and is a student ambassador for his degree.
