Representatives from UON and the on-campus residential community in the Student Living precinct came together on November 6 for a night of glamour and fun to celebrate the annual Intercollegiate Competition (ICC) Awards.
The hotly contested Intercollegiate Competition has a strong 25 year tradition at UON where the on-campus community battle it out across the year and celebrate achievement in the areas of academics, arts, sports and their contributions to the broader community, claiming bragging rights over other residences for the ultimate Residence of the Year Award.
The competition exists as part of the ResLife Program which aims to make the residential experience at UON second to none, with an integrated program of vibrant student focused activities that create a sense of community and showcase the diverse talents of our residents. The competition is comprised of five shields; the Academic shield, the Community shield, the Arts shield, the Sports shield and Residence of the Year, with a cumulative points system used at events throughout the year.
This year, the real winners were the National Youth Mental Health Foundation charity, Headspace, who provides early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds. Edwards Hall, the ICC Residence of the Year winners were able to present them with a $10, 000 donation as a result of their fundraising efforts over the past eight months. The donation was the largest the Newcastle Headspace branch has ever received from a single donor.
In addition, an incredible $37,000 has been raised this year by the UON Callaghan and Ourimbah residential community for organisations including Cancer Council, the McGrath Foundation and Hunter Animal Rescue, taking the total dollars raised by the UON Student Living community over the past five years to in excess of $100,000.
The 2015 ICC Awards winners are:
- Edwards Hall – Residence of the Year and Sports Shield,
- Barahineban – Community Shield
- North Residence – Arts Shield
- East Residence – Academic Shield
